If you live in Syracuse, there’s a good chance you’ve already experienced the creative energy of the Black Artist Collective (BAC)—whether at a community action event, art exhibit, showcase performance, or creative workshop. Founded in 2020 by a group of local artists and community activists—Jaleel Campbell, Cjala Surratt, Qiana Williams, Alice Queen Olom, and Martikah Williams—BAC is much more than an arts organization. It’s a movement rooted in advocacy, celebration, and practical support for Black artists across Central New York.

At its core, BAC is committed to creating a safe, affirming space for artists of color. They serve as a vital resource hub, helping artists access funding, gain exposure, and find community. Their work spans arts education, cultural programming, and social justice initiatives, all while amplifying Black excellence in all areas of artistry and civic life.

One of BAC’s most anticipated annual events is Freedom Fest, a vibrant community celebration held each August in recognition of Black August—a time to reflect on Black resilience and honor the legacy of Black liberation movements. Supported in part by a grant from The Gifford Foundation, Freedom Fest brings together music, dance, comedy, food, and a marketplace featuring local Black-owned businesses and artists.

Last year’s event, hosted in partnership with Niche Production founder Kanischa Miller, drew record crowds and expanded its programming to include a comedy lineup that brought fresh voices and laughter to the stage. This year, Freedom Fest returns on Saturday, August 9, promising even more performances, artisans, and community connection.

To keep up with Freedom Fest performance announcements and everything that BAC is working on, follow them on Instagram (@bac_cny) and Facebook (@blkartistcollective). Whether you’re an artist, advocate, or enthusiastic attendee, stay tuned for all the ways BAC is growing a creative movement that uplifts, educates, and celebrates.
