Here in Syracuse, there’s an effort underway to ignite young minds, expand horizons, and empower the next generation of innovators. Syracuse STEM National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), led by local educator and counselor Mark Mason, is transforming the lives of local students by cultivating a love for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

For over 27 years, Mason has served as a counselor at Nottingham High School, earning accolades for his unwavering commitment to STEM education among Central New York youth. Under his leadership and with the help of Gwendolyn Reaford (a retired teacher and commissioner of education in the Syracuse City School District), Syracuse STEM NSBE provides hands-on learning experiences designed to spark curiosity and build confidence.
In 2024, Syracuse STEM received a Gifford “What If…” grant in support of a one-week summer camp in July for 5th through 12th grade students. With additional support from Syracuse University and the Upstate Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation program, the camp was hosted on SU’s campus and brought together an all-volunteer team of counselors, including local teachers, STEM enthusiasts, and current SU students.
Students were encouraged to explore the concepts of renewable energy and design—the chosen themes for the week—in innovative ways. From flying drones in local parks to building robotics kits and designing virtual racecars in an esports racing competition, the camp was a vibrant hub of exploration and teamwork. Students learned new STEM vocabulary and gained exposure to various engineering disciplines through problem-solving exercises and hands-on projects.
The success of the summer camp continues to motivate Mason in his efforts with Syracuse STEM NSBE in the year ahead. He is preparing to take a group of Syracuse STEM students to Chicago in March for the NSBE-Ten80 National Competition—a major opportunity to showcase their developing STEM skills.
Mason’s vision is clear: to make STEM accessible and exciting for more Syracuse youth. It’s an undertaking that relies on dedicated volunteers and generous donors.
